In the wake of a tragic accident involving a hyperbaric chamber explosion that took the life of a 5-year-old boy at an unregulated facility in Troy, Michigan, the topic of hyperbaric chamber safety has come into sharp focus.
Lawmakers in Lansing are now drafting legislation to require accreditation for hyperbaric chamber facilities. The legislation—led by State Representative Sharon MacDonell and State Senator Stephanie Chang—is aimed at preventing similar tragedies from occurring again by enforcing clear standards and safety protocols across the industry.
As the public looks for reassurance and answers, Dr. Bruce Ruben, Medical Director and founder of Encompass Healthcare and Wound Medicine in West Bloomfield, was featured in a recent segment by WXYZ Detroit. With over 20 years of experience operating hyperbaric chambers, Dr. Ruben provided insight into how accredited and physician-led facilities are already holding themselves to the highest safety standards.
“Safety is not something we take lightly,” said Dr. Ruben. “Every patient is monitored throughout their session. We use static-free linens, ensure proper airflow, and require the patient to wear a grounding cord that virtually eliminates the risk of fire.”
While some facilities operate without medical oversight, Encompass Healthcare is proud to be led by a board-certified physician. Dr. Ruben explained that he holds accreditation from the American Society of Preventive Medicine, which provides oversight of physician-led care.
“The provider is the one who needs to be accredited,” Dr. Ruben emphasized. “We follow rigorous protocols and undergo annual chamber inspections, certified piping installation, and manufacturer-led equipment life cycle management.”
The proposed legislation would require accreditation through organizations like the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, which evaluates operational policies, facility safety, and governance structures. While Dr. Ruben supports the push for patient safety, he emphasized that many qualified medical facilities, like Encompass, already go above and beyond these standards.
This story has sparked an important conversation about hyperbaric chamber safety and the critical role of experienced, accredited medical professionals in ensuring positive outcomes for patients.
For individuals seeking hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for non-healing wounds, infections, or other conditions, Encompass Healthcare remains a trusted provider in Michigan—known for its commitment to safety, expertise, and personalized care.
If you or a loved one is considering hyperbaric oxygen therapy, be sure to ask the right questions:
Is the facility medically supervised?
Are safety protocols clearly in place and followed?
Is the equipment certified and maintained regularly?
Is the provider board-certified in wound or preventive medicine?
