Bioengineered skin substitutes (sometimes containing   stem cells) are used to stimulate and encourage new tissue growth is today’s future! At Encompass Healthcare and Wound Medicine, we use these wondrous technologies every day.

Skin substitutes are used to expedite healing once all the other  5 reasons why wounds don’t heal   have been successfully addressed. After these potential problems are ruled out, skin substitutes can then be considered as a viable option.

Dermagraft

Dermagraft is a skin substitute is indicated for use in the treatment of full-thickness diabetic foot ulcers greater than six weeks duration, which extend through the dermis, but without tendon, muscle, joint capsule, or bone exposure. Dermagraft should be used in conjunction with standard wound care regimens and in patients that have adequate blood supply to the involved foot. With the use of these stem cells, the patient is able to make the skin substitute “his/her own,” integrating and synthesizing these cells as if they were always present.

AlloDerm Regenerative Tissue Matrix

AlloDerm Regenerative Tissue Matrix is processed from donated human tissue that must pass the same stringent screening criteria as any other implantable tissue or organ (heart, lungs, kidneys, etc.).

3

Grafix

Grafix is a three-dimensional cellular matrix designed for application directly to acute and chronic wounds, including diabetic   foot ulcers   and burns. Flexible, conforming and immune neutral, this cellular repair matrix provides a rich source of viable, multipotent MSCs, and growth factors directly to the site of the wound while the matrix protects the area from inflammation, scarring, and infection.

Apligraf®

Apligraf® is a unique, advanced treatment for healing. It is created from cells found in healthy human skin. Which explains why it looks like a thin, piece of real skin. It is used to heal ulcers such as diabetic foot and venous leg ulcers that are not healing after 3-4 weeks, despite treatment with conventional therapies.

Oasis®

Oasis® Wound Matrix is a skin substitute naturally derived from porcine small intestinal submucosa. The natural tissue scaffold is incorporated and absorbed into the wound environment.

Skin flap

Skin flap is a piece of tissue that is still attached to the body by a major artery and vein or at its base. This piece of tissue with its attached blood supply is used in reconstructive surgery by being set into a recipient site (injured area onto which a flap or graft is placed). Sometimes, the flap is comprised of skin and fatty tissue only, but a flap may also include muscle from the donor site (the area from which the flap is raised).
